a guide of the most impressive or old, or both, civil buildings
from Brasov. For making a complete tour of them as easy as possible,
they are grouped according to the streets where they can be found.
The
Old City Center
CASA ARMATEI or CERCUL MILITAR - THE
HOUSE OF THE ARMY
1, Muresenilor St
Built by Constantin Iotzu, between World War
I and World War II, it synthesizes modern architecture with
the Romanian style
characteristic of the beginning of the 20th century. The artesian
well next to the building is the oldest in town( late 19th
century).
SCHOBELN HOUSE
9, Muresenilor St
The building still preserves some elements
of the original one, built in 1550.
THE ROMAN-CATHOLIC PARISH HOUSE
19, Muresenilor St
It was built between the 16th and 17th century.
MURESENILOR HOUSE
25, Muresenilor St
Quirky and charming would well describe this
unusual family museum situated across from Brasov's central
square.It was
set up in 1968 as a result of the Muresianu family descendants
donation.It exhibits letters, photographs, newspapers, rare
books, paintings,sculptures, furniture from the 19th century,
heirlooms and keepsakes of the musical and literary members
and in-laws of Muresianu's.
"JOHANNES HONTERUS" HIGH-SCHOOL
1-5, Curtea J. Honterus
Founded in the 14th century, the German
school has been active since. The three buildings have been
recently restored to their
former glory.
THE PARISH HOUSE
2, Curtea Honterus
Built in the 14th century, it underwent many
changes since, being last altered in the 18th century. What
we can see today
is a combination of Renaissance and Baroque elements.
"CONTINENTAL" HOTEL
50, Castelului St
The hotel was built at the end of the 19th
century in a Neo-Baroque style with Viennese influence decorations.
"REDUTA" CONCERT
HALL AND THEATRE
8, Hirscher St
The Eclectic styled building was built at the
end of the 19th century.
STRADA SFORII-THE ROPE STREET
It is considered the narrowest street in Europe. It links
Cerbului Street with Poarta Schei. It is 80 m long and its
width is between 111cm and 135 cm (3.64 feet to 4.42 feet).
It was mentioned in official documents starting with the 17th
century.It was first meant to facilitate easier access to the
city Centrex for the firefighters. The street was renovated
in 2003 around 1.3 meters (4 ft.) wide. Newly renovated in
2003.
THE HIRSCHER HOUSE
14, Sfatului Square, Brasov
Casa Hirscher is an imposing house
which borders the Council Square (Piata Sfatului). Apollonia
Hirscher, the widow of Brasov's
mayor, erected it during 1541-1547. The house was a tribute
to the city and its intended use was as a trade center for
the merchants of Brasov. It was designed copying the merchandise
halls from the old big cities of East Europe.It is built in
Renaissance style. Since the first floor was the market for
high-boots, the building was named "Podul Batusilor" (The
High-Boots Attic). Above the entrance you still can see the
Hirsher's coat of arms.
REPUBLICII STREET
Republicii Street is Brasov's main pedestrian thoroughfare,
leading away from the Council Square towards B-dl Eroilor.
No cars are allowed here which makes it a popular place for
strolling. The street is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants
and it's crowded but nice, especially in the summer.
JEKELIUS HOUSE
17, Republicii St
It was built in the 16th century.
JUGEND STYLE HOUSE
22, Republicii St
The former building of The Romanian National
Bank, it was erected at the end of the 19th century. It was
built in Jugend
style by the architect Schuller.
"COROANA" HOTEL
62, Republicii St
It was built at the end of the 19th century,
Eclectic style, and it used to be the city's most modern hotel,
having 100
rooms with bathrooms, electricity, central heating.
THE OLD GRAIN STOREHOUSE
11, Piata George Enescu
The 14th century Gothic building used
to be the city's storehouse for the goods brought by Vallah
and Moldavian merchants.
Eroilor Bulevard
THE CITY HALL AND THE CENTRAL POST OFFICE
5-8, B-dl Eroilor
They were both built at the beginning of the
20th century.
THE COUNTY HALL-PREFECTURA

The former Court House was built in 1902.
THE ART MUSEUM

This Neo-Baroque building was erected in
1902.
THE RECTOR'S OFFICE

The former Prefecture of the city, the Neo
Renaissance building was built in 1884.
BAIULESCU VILLA

It was built in 1888, on the spot of a former
bastion, by Manole Dimandi who offered it as a wedding gift
to his daughter
and her husband, Gheorghe Baiulescu, who was Brasov's first
Romanian mayor.
THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The building of the Public Library, erected
between 1926-1928, is a fine example of Neo Romanian architectural
style.
Schei District
BRANCOVEANU'S SISTER'S HOUSE
10, C-tin Brancoveanu St
The 18th century building still preserves
some of Neo-Classic elements around the frames of the windows
and of the main entrance.
BALASA BRANCOVEANU HOUSE
12, C-tin Brancoveanu St
It was built in 1793 in Brancoveanu
style.The summer house in the yard combines eastern and Brancoveanu
elements.
LA RATZA (AT THE DUCK'S) INN

On the facade, there is the molding
of a Turkish head,probably an indicator that the inn used to
have Turkish guests, as well.
BRANCOVEANU LAMBRINO HOUSE

The house dates back to the second
half of the 18th century. It is a baroque building. The rooms
are ornate with moldings
depicting scenes from the Bible.
CONSTANTIN LECCA HOUSE

It was built in 1731.
BRANCOVEANU MANSION

Imposingly built on three levels, the
18th century house is a fusion of local, old Balkan and Brancoveanu
architectural
styles.
CIURCULET HOUSE
7, Piata Unirii (Square)
Built in the 17th century, it is a
representative of the Romanian architectural style specific
for the Schei District. It also
belonged to the Brancoveanu family.
THE PROVINCIAL BAROQUE HOUSE
2, Pe Tocile St
It used to be Prince Constantin Brancoveanu's
house. It was built in a provincial baroque style, in the 18th
century. It
is a representative house for the Schei District style: an
open porch with 7 arches resting on short, square-shaped pillars.
ANCUTZA BRANCOVEANU HOUSE
3-5, Vasile Saftu St
The house belonged to the Prince Constantin
Brancoveanu's daughter, Ancutza. It was erected in the 18th
century. The
style
is provincial baroque, to which the builder added some Brancoveanu
elements: the porches and the interior moldings.
THE HOUSE WITH ICONS 1
15, Vasile Saftu St
Another provincial baroque styled house,
it used to belong to a well-off family of shepards. Remarkable
is the oil painting
on the facade depicting the Christening of Our Lord.

This house dates back to 1773.
NICOLAE TECLU HOUSE

Built in the 19th century.
NEO-ROMANIAN HOUSE
45, Prundului St
It was built in Neo-Romanian style in 1910
by architect G. Ducsoiu. It used to be the student hostel of
'Andrei Saguna'
High School.
NICOLAE CIURCU HOUSE

This building was erected in the 18th century.
THE " ANDREI SAGUNA" HIGH
SCHOOL
1, Andrei Saguna St
A combination of Renaissance, Classic and
Empire styles, the building was erected in 1851, designed by
Brasovian architect
Stefan Emilian.
