The Golden Stag Festival
(Cerbul de Aur in Romanian) is an annual international pop
music festival held in our city.
Before the MTV Music Awards were created, an event was needed
to inspire local and international musicians to greatness.
Thus came the Golden Stag Festival into existence, on of the
most
inportant European festivals. The main organiser is Televiziunea
Romana, Romania's state-run (and largest) television
network. The festival has two main components: an international
contest and guest performances by both Romanian and foreign
stars. The Golden Stag was first held in 1968.
Well-known
artists have performed at the festival over the years, including
Gilbert Becaud, Josephine Baker, Toto Cutugno,
James Brown, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, UB 40, Scorpions, Ricky
Martin, Pink, Sheryl Crow and many others. The Stag has also
shown a special gift for discovering young singers who eventually
become famous; such as Julio Iglesias, whose international
debut occurred on the Stag stage, as well as Christina Aguillera,
who participated in the contest more than a decade ago.
